FAQs

does it hurt??

no parent wants to put their child through pain or see them upset and although your child may cry and the piercing is a bit of a shock, the piercing procedure is very fast and usually nothing more than a quick pinch. after piercing hundreds of children dee realized the most traumatic part of the experience is holding the child tightly while the ear piercing procedure is being performed. this is generally the point they will begin to cry. but, because dee works so quickly and has a methodical system, this part never lasts long.

do your freeze their ear?

the topical numbing cream must be applied and covered for up to 30 minutes or longer (depending on the manufacturer) to be effective. for this reason we do not apply any freezing prior to a body piercing but, we encourage you to take this step with your child before coming in for their appointment if it gives you peace of mind. this can also be an easy way to calm down a toddler or older child who may be a little over anxious or nervous. you can purchase topical numbing creams over-the-counter at the pharmacy and as mentioned above, the area must be covered; we strongly suggest using only saran wrap for this opposed to bandaids or the adhesive covering that may come with the cream itself. these products are incredibly difficult to remove and usually upsets the child before the procedure has even begun. the area will be cleaned thoroughly with alcohol and betadine so all numbing product will be removed prior to marking the ears.

what kind of jewelry do you use?

making sure your child is pierced with quality body piercing jewelry is imperative for the piercings to heal well!

we do not pierce with butterfly back stud as these are manufactured from poor quality materials, the butterfly backing is also hard to keep clean and will hold bacteria and discharge buildup.

At coven body arts, we carry a selection of captive bead rings or flatback labret studs in titanium either of which will work for a little ones new ear piercing. rings will sometimes see more irritation than a stud so often we will recommend studs especially for active children. twisting, turning and spinning the ear piercing jewelry is not necessary when piercing with implant grade materials, in actuality all this practice does is introduce bacteria into the piercing which generally leads to infection and delays the healing cycle.

do they play sports that will require the removal of the jewelry?

always take into consideration your child’s lifestyle when thinking about having their ears pierced. All of these can factor into a problematic healing period.

waiting until your child’s sports season has passed and getting pierced in the off-season would be more ideal and would give the piercing a chance to heal. once a piercing has fully healed, plastic retainers can be inserted during practices or games.

Do they wear equipment that irritates the area?

helmets and sports equipment can sometimes cause excessive irritation to healing piercings. taking this into consideration, if this will be an issue we do recommend waiting until the sports season is over.

if this is not a possibilty, dee is always open to discuss and brainstorm ideas to try and figure out the best solution for you and your child.

Are they in swimming lessons or going on vacation for the summer?

if you have summer vacation plans or your child is in swimming lessons we do strongly suggest waiting until after you have returned from vacation, summer has passed or swimming lessons are over.

submersing fresh piercings in open bodies of water like pools, hottubs, lakes or even your bathtub at home can introduce bacteria into the area and lead to a problematic healing period.
